Six Teams To Submit Proposal To Push Back Trade Deadline

Feb 29, 2024 8:16 AM

Six teams plan to submit a proposal to the league that will push the NFL trade deadline from Week 8 to Week 10.

The Cleveland Browns, Washington Commanders, Philadelphia Eagles, New York Jets, Detroit Lions and San Francisco 49ers are set to propose a later trade deadline that would, in effect, lead to an increase in trades.

It's unclear if the proposal would be approved by owners at next month's annual league meetings in Florida.

GM: Michael Pittman, Jr. Will Be A Colt In 2024

Feb 29, 2024 8:12 AM

Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard offered a simple prediction when asked whether impending free agent Michael Pittman, Jr. will be on the roster next season.

"Yes," Ballard said.

The Colts' top wide receiver the past three seasons, Pittman is set to become a free agent in the coming weeks after playing out his rookie contract.

"We've had talks with [Pittman's] agent, who is really good... We'll work hard to get a deal done," Ballard continued.

Jets Give Zach Wilson OK To Seek Trade

Feb 29, 2024 8:09 AM

The New York Jets have granted Zach Wilson's agent permission to speak with other teams about a trade.

Wilson's fate with the Jets was sealed at the end of the season, when the team made it clear they would be in the market for a veteran backup to play behind Aaron Rodgers. That sentiment was reinforced recently by owner Woody Johnson, who said, "We need a backup quarterback. We didn't have one last year."

Joe Douglas didn't say whether Wilson requested a trade, although it's no secret that he's looking for a change of scenery. The team told him during the season that it would be willing to accommodate him, sources said.

FedEx Bails On Commanders Naming-Rights Deal

Feb 29, 2024 8:06 AM

FedEx has severed its naming-rights ties with the Washington Commanders, ending their agreement two years early by taking advantage of the team's change in ownership.

The remaining two years were worth approximately $15 million in revenue.

The Commanders must now find another sponsor. The team announced $75 million in upgrades and improvements to their stadium earlier this week.

While the move caught the team by surprise, according to multiple sources, the Commanders have been quietly seeking a new partnership for the past two months.

Chiefs Release Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Save $12M Against Cap

Feb 28, 2024 11:12 AM

The Kansas City Chiefs are releasing wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, which will save $12 million against their salary cap.

Valdes-Scantling played two seasons with the Chiefs after signing as a free agent from the Green Bay Packers. He caught 42 passes in 2022 and 21 last season but often had his biggest moments in the playoffs.

Rashee Rice was the Chiefs' leading pass catcher in 2023 with 79.

Cowboys 'Absolutely' Want A Long-Term Deal With Dak Prescott

Feb 28, 2024 8:24 AM

The Dallas Cowboys "absolutely" want to sign Dak Prescott to a long-term deal.

"Our whole thing with Dak is him being a Cowboy," executive vice president Stephen Jones said. "That's all that's on our mind."

Prescott is scheduled to count $59.4 million against the salary cap for 2024 in the final year of his contract.

The Cowboys could do a simple restructuring that would give them $18.52 million in cap relief for this season, but it would push money to 2025 and 2026 with Prescott counting nearly $55 million against the cap in 2025 even if he played elsewhere.

The Cowboys, though, say they are committed to Prescott long term and want to sign him to a long-term deal.

"We got ways to adjust his cap number for this season," Jones said of Prescott. "Obviously between Dak and Micah [Parsons] and CeeDee [Lamb], the salary cap is real for us. We want to do deals with all three of them. Do you get to do everything you want to do with the salary cap? I don't think any team does. But we're certainly going to be able to go out and go to work and get the things done that we feel like we need to get done to be successful."

Mike McDaniel 'Very Encouraged' By Tua Tagovailoa Contract Talks

Feb 28, 2024 8:20 AM

Tua Tagovailoa is in the fifth and final year of his rookie contract with the Miami Dolphins.

The quarterback remains without a long-term deal, but Mike McDaniel has expressed optimism about where things are headed.

McDaniel said at a press conference on Tuesday that he is "very encouraged" about how talks with Tagovailoa are progressing.

"Both his representation and our organization are hard at work," McDaniel said. "Those timelines are impossible to predict. My main concern this offseason has been communicating what Tua needs from his head coach and his offensive coaching staff, which is what things can we identify to continue the progression of your game the same way that we have since Day One."

Vikings GM: Trading Justin Jefferson Has Never Crossed My Mind

Feb 28, 2024 8:18 AM

The Minnesota Vikings are throwing cold water on rumors that they could trade Justin Jefferson.

"That is not something that has ever crossed my mind," Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah said.

Kevin O'Connell was also asked about potentially trading away his best player, a possibility he railed against.

"I can tell you we have no intent to trade Justin Jefferson," O'Connell said. "We have had zero discussions, dialogue about that either internally, externally, on this planet or another planet. I feel very strongly that Justin is best in his position in football. Any time you're trying to reset the receiver market -- we know who he is, we know what Justin's earned through his first four years in this league -- you know how hard it is. ... It was never gonna be something that was just be easy to get done, but the intent was there. The intent is still stronger than ever to get something done with Justin."

Mike Macdonald Won't Commit To Geno Smith As Quarterback

Feb 28, 2024 8:15 AM

After moving on from Pete Carroll after 14 seasons, the Seattle Seahawks might also see a change at quarterback.

There is no guarantee Geno Smith will be the team's starter in 2024.

During a recent interview, new coach Mike Macdonald was asked if Smith and Drew Lock would be "involved in the future of this organization going forward," and he was very non-committal with his answer.

"That's a tough question and it's one that I probably can't answer right now," Macdonald said. "But we're doing a lot of work on those guys and I've had conversations just to get to know them and understand who they are as people and their background, and goals and what their family's like and where they're from. I didn't know anything about them coming into this whole thing. So, right now we're in the phase of figuring out who they are."

NFL Competition Committee To Pitch Kickoff Rule Change

Feb 28, 2024 8:11 AM

The NFL Competition Committee is expected to pitch a rule change for kickoffs to owners during spring meetings.

Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones expects the committee to propose a one-year alternative that will make returns part of the game again.

Different options have been presented -- including the XFL model in which the kicking team lined up at the opponents 35 and the return team lined up at the 30 with only the kicker and return allowed to move until the ball is touched.

Of the 2,698 kickoffs in 2023, only 587 were returned with 1,970 touchbacks and 92 fair catches.

"I think everybody wants something different," Jones said. "They don't want a ceremonial play. They want it to be a real play and we just got to do it in a way that's safe for the players so you don't have the injury rate that we've had in the past; that it's more in line with what a typical football play is. So I think that's really important ... I think it can be a positive play that the fans would really enjoy."
